This appears to be a fairly basic gps system that will accomplish what I want to accomplish using it on the water.

Anybody have any experience with it- know any pros and cons

Thanks

Re: Garmin gps map76S

I have an older GPSMAP 76 and it works ok. I got it the first year they came out. Back then they had a much better base map with all the buoys and navigation aids. They down graded the base map to only be about half as detailed as the old unit. I guess to force you to buy their map. Unit is dim and hard to see in the car but works ok boating or hicking. Unit is also very slow and takes forever to redraw maps if running it track up mode.

Last year I bought a Lowrance Ifinder H2O C. The base map has 3 times the detail as the new Garmin GPSMAP 76 C. It faster brighter and cheaper. After a year and a half only found two things I like better on the Garmin.
1 The alarm is louder.
2 the batteries are eaiser to replace.

Of course the Lowrance comes with a free lighter plug.
Garmin the plug is about $40.

I would suggest you compare the 2 before you buy. The Garmin map is so bad can hardly see San Francisco Bay.
