Re: Garmin gps software

Hi, Larry.

Go to Garmin International. There is a listing of available Mapsource CDs and also a list of what's compatible with your GPSMAP 76. You can also download (free) any operating software updates.

I used the "US Roads and Recreation" CD, but I think it has been superceded by a more up-to-date package. It even had my driveway on the Parker County, TX map. :)

Good luck. :)

Re: Garmin gps software

If you have a plain GPS-Map it can use the older Roads and Recreation. The newest models can not use that software at all. I just sold a GPSMap-76 that I had Roads and Recreation loaded up in. I bought a new GPSMap-76CS (the color version with barometric altimeter and magnetic compass built in) and it can NOT use the older Roads and Recreation. The CS has to use their newer.

As for the primarily roadway mapping versions here is what Garmin has to say about them:

City Navigator
Designed specifically for the StreetPilot® III, StreetPilot 2610, and 2650, this CD contains detailed maps of major metropolitan areas, coverage of rural areas, points of interest, and more. In addition, each CD has automatic routing, giving you the capability to generate point-to-point routes in MapSource® and on compatible Garmin® units.
4 versions: North America Australia Europe Middle East

City Select®
City Select provides detailed maps of major metro areas as well as rural coverage. Each CD also contains points of interest and automatic routing, giving you the capability to generate point-to-point routes in MapSource and on compatible Garmin units. The CD is included with the purchase of several Garmin units, including the GPS V, iQue series, GPS 18 and Quest. See the product compatibility table (right) for a list of products that Garmin recommends with this software.
3 versions: North America Europe South Africa

MetroGuide®
This CD offers similar coverage as City Select, including points of interest. MetroGuide North America and Europe provide automatic route calculation for select products on the PC, while MetroGuide Canada offers autorouting on both the PC and compatible Garmin units. The main difference is its compatibility with Garmin units that do not have automatic route capability. See the product compatibility table (right) for a list of products that Garmin recommends with this software.
4 versions: North America Australia Canada Europe

Points of Interest
This CD is designed for Garmin GPS units that do not have built-in road and street detail but do accept points of interest data. Once this data is downloaded to your unit, you can look up services and use your GPS to guide you there. Points of Interest is recommended for use with the eTrex Venture, GPS 72, GPS 76, and Rino 110.
1 version: North America

Trip & Waypoint Manager
This trip planning CD is designed for use with Garmin units that have no built-in map detail or city point database, such as the GPS 12, eTrex, eTrex Summit, Geko 201 and Geko 301. With this simple, affordable CD, you get the benefit of being able to create waypoints and routes on your PC and then download them to your unit. You can also transfer waypoints, routes and tracks from your outing back to your PC for recall at a later date. You will not be able to download map detail to any Garmin GPS using this product.
1 version Trip & Waypoint Manager

WorldMap
For travel outside North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia; take a look at the WorldMap CD, which provides basic worldwide maps. Use the trip and waypoint management function to create routes and waypoints for your trips and transfer them to your GPS. WorldMap is compatible with most Garmin GPS units and is generally recommended only if no other coverage is available for the area.
1 version: Worldwide

If you go to this part of Garmin's website it will tell you what is available and which software is compatable with various GPS units:

http://www.garmin.com/cartography/

Thom

Re: Garmin gps software

I have used the USR&R and thought it was great, especially showing detail in the rural areas. I just got a look at City Select and Metro Guide and didn't think they had the detail of the USR&R. I'm sure the new software is better in the city but I was not impressed with it and will keep using the roads and rec.

Re: Garmin gps software

Has anyone used a Blue Chart chip in a Garmin GPSMap? I have a GPSMap 188 combined GPS/Sounder and am thinking of buying the Blue Chart but would like to hear if anyone has used one and if so what they think?
