Garmin internal memory gps question...enough?

I'm debating between a Garmin eTrex Summit HC or eTrex Vista HCx.

The only difference is the Summit has 24mb of internal memory and the Vista has expandable memory. I only want to download the maps for my province as I only need/want it for local use.

Can anyone tell me if the 24mb is enough? (the boys at Cabella's can't. Mailed Gamin and they sent me a link to downloadable maps....duh?)

It seems to be anywhere from $65-90 dollars difference, wondering if it's worth it?

No it is not enough. I have a 60c with 60MB and I fill it when I use is for street navigation or put 24k topos on it. If you are going to use it for water navigation then get the one that takes a SD card. You can have a ton of maps on them. One with both would even be better.

Thanks! I was hoping someone with experience would answer. I'll get the expandable memory.

I go for expandable memory on any device I buy if it is available. The price of those chips are dropping like crazy and you will want to keep that device for a long time.

Without question, the 24Mb is not suitable for most of the current map software. More importantly, the Summit is nothing like the Vista. The Summit has no mapping capabilities at all. The Vista has autorouting ability plus a whole lot more. Here is a comparison from Garmins website.

Click on comparison.

I have the Vista CX with topo maps, road maps and marine charts for Ontario and the memory requirement was about 1.2Gb. I have other map sets on different memory cards that I can switch out at will.

Thanks, no doubt I'm going for the Vista HCx.

By spec I thought I was going to get a 76CSx, but after looking at them in person I found the Vista's screen to be much brighter and easier to read.

Just have to find a good deal. ;)

You won't be disappointed. I've had my unit for 2 years now and use it all the time. Agree, the display is easy to read even though it is somewhat small.

Keep your eyes on eBay. They are available all the time on there for a good price.
