Gas Everywhere

I was out last weekend on my 19ft Cobra with a 93 120 Force. The engine was runnign great for the first hour or 2. Started fine, ran smooth, it even ran a little on the fast side!
However, about 1-2 hours into boating, I lost power, like something got wrapped around the prop. The engine was shaking and I limoed home. There was also a lot of smoke (Gas smell, not burning) coming out of the exhaust ports (much more than usual) When I got back to port, there was A LOT of gas all over the in side of my engine. The bottom carb cover was full of gas.
I gave the carbs a thorough cleaning about 2 months ago, but did not soak or rebuild them.
Any suggestions?
Anyone think it could be a cylinder?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Gas Everywhere

Pull the plugs and check compression. If that is fine try to start it on muffs and see where the fuel is from. Have a fire extinguisher nearby. You might find a fuel leak by just squeezing the primer. Let us know what you find.

Re: Gas Everywhere

Thanks BK 68.
I had a similar problem in the beginning of the season. The engine would start then the idle would slow way down. The engine would finally shut off and the overheat alarm would sound. There was a lot of gass coming from the carbs at that point too. I took them off, took them apart, cleaned them thoroughly, and put them back on. I was just trying to get it through a couple more time out, and rebuild them this winter.
I think the fuel system is fine. I checked it over when I got back, and nothing seemed to be broken, leaking, or disconnected.
I am wondering if you or anyone else has had this type of problem. I know this could mean the carbs are ready for a rebuild,, but could it also mean a blown cylinder? Would it discharge a lot of gas?

Re: Gas Everywhere

Alot of gas from the carbs says the floats are not closing and causing them to overflow. This will flood the engine and cause it to lose power. I think it is time for that rebuild. Check the floats to make sure they don't fill with gas.
