Gas filling SLOW!

I have a 1980 Mako I bought about 6 months ago and the gas fills super SLOW and most the time bubbles back up on me if I am not careful. I have done some reading and maybe my vent is blocked? But I see fumes coming from the vent line. Any suggestions?

Re: Gas filling SLOW!

Could just be that the route that the fill hose has to take to get to the gas tank does not allow for proper flow to the tank causing backups. I have to watch for this on my 18' Cobia.

Could be a clog in the vent as well, or just that the vent line does not allow for hta mount of air to escape as quickly as it is being displaced by the fuel.

Either the vent is blocked, or the fill is blocked. Even though the vent shows fumes, it can still be partially blocked. Remove the vent hose and blow the line clean or probe with wire. Generally the fill hoses don't have problems because they are wire wound to prevent collapse.

Disconnect the vent hose at the tank, blast it out with compressed air.
Just found my newly installed hose filled with a big fat grub, looks like a cicada.

Re: Gas filling SLOW!

I run the gas dock at the marina where i work, and i see A LOT of boats that have horribly designed vent/feed hoses. where you have to basically drip the fuel in or else it backs up and spills into the water. Its not even old boats either, its like 2008 model boats and they are backing up and have horrible venting. Its just life with boats. If you are rebuilding a boat, make sure you have the 2 vent/feed lines as straight as possible(if not perfect) and make sure they are large diameter hose. When we ripped our boat appart, i made sure we would not have a problem with this, becuase it is a majour PITA.

You are not the only one with this issue, if you are lucky it will only be clogged, but i bet it is just poorly designed.

I have no access to the fuel tank, like I said it a 1980 model boat and I just want to get this fixed for now so I can continue to use it until the winter and I can get ripped apart. I opened the tank fill and sprayed compressed air into the vent line and there was no air coming out of the fill line, so there may be a clog...

Reach under the gunnel and feel for the vent hose, dollar t' donuts says its kinked right there, not clogged.

or....you have a spider that made a home there. Seems like every time I use my coleman stove ( once a year ), I have to take the venturi and burners apart to clean out some dead spider/webbing in order for it to work properly.

Depending on how the vent output is, you might try to ream a piece of copper wire through it to see if you can determine if there are any blockage issues or tight turns.
