My 71 4hp Johnson runs fine as long as the gas tank is held up so the gas can gravity feed. Please tell me why it runs out of gas when the tank is down below the motor.
Thank you
Jack

Re: gas flow

There is an air leak somewhere in the hose between the fuel pump and gas tank, OR the fuel pump is no good. The fuel pump MIGHT be rebuildable with a kit from here at iboats, but I gotta tell you that they made some badly designed pumps along about that year. If you have one of those, the kit won't fit. The only way I know to tell is to take it apart and see if it has "real" check valves or if it has the rubber flap check valves. The rubber flap kind ard no good, and you will have to replace the pump. 18-7350 from iboats.

BTW, that is the usual problem with the rubber flap pumps---wouldn't lift gas.
