gas gauge

hi, i have a 2000 16.5' silverline w/115 hp mercury outboard,<br /><br />the problem i have is after i completly fill the gas tank my gas guage still reads only 1/4 full. (it never changes)<br /><br />how can i fix this problem??

vicar,<br /><br />You have to determine if it's the guage or the sending unit.<br /><br />Can you find the sender on top of the tank? It should be readily accessable. If your fuel tank is in the floor, it probably has a pry or screw out plate over it.<br /><br />Once you find the sender, remove the wire lead that is on the center of the sender. With the key on, ground that wire to a suitable ground-preferably the battery neg. post. if the guage moves, the sender is the culprit. if not, the guage is most likely the problem.

alright, i tried it and the gauge moves but only to just about half a tank, i even moved the folat up and down----is it still the sender???

vicar,<br /><br />That points more toward the guage. Check to see that the connections to the guage are tight and clean.<br /><br />To prove out your sender-do the following.<br /><br />If you have an ohm meter. Connect the leads (all boat power off) between the sender lead and ground. Now operate the float lever up and down. You should see the ohms go up and down evenly with the movement.
