I have a question about the gas use. Since I have started to use this mercury 650 Thundebolt, I noticed that it is extremely bad on gas. I ran for maybe ten minutes but then ran mostly at idle spped for a test run. I have a six gallon gas container after running for maybe 30 minutes I burnt almost a half of a tank. to me that is way too much fuel use. is there anything I can do to improve that? it 2 cycle motor. I know they are not known for good gas milage but I think this is way too much consumption for what I would consider very little time in use could you give me some pointers or where I need to improve it to a normal rate of use? carbs have been rebuilt. when you pump the bulb, there gas comming out the throat or fron of carb.

Normally that motor woukd use about 6 gal/hour at wide open. Since you ran less than wide open, I would look for leaking fuel lines, carbs and maybe a leaking fuel pump. Check the plugs to make sure they are all firing.

Did a shop rebuild the carbs or did you and was the resynch procedure done after they were re-installed. If not, do it. If you rebuilt the carbs then go back and recheck your work if a shop did them take it back. Sounds like you have a float out of adjustment.

Re: Gas how much is normal and not?

I did rebuild the carbs myself. I cleaned then and blew all the holes out with my compressor. when I pump the bulb, that when I notice the fuel comming out of the the bottom carb. on the float all there is a spring in the center, now how would you adjust that? I dont have anything to easure the rpms, that I have to do by trial and error. the shps around here charge 90 bucks an hour and I dont have then money due to that Im on temp unemployment till Jan. I did some adjustments and it seems to a little better on fuel but dang 6 gallons a hour, doesnt leave much room for going anywhere if your trying to have a day fishing. lol. I did copy the link that was posted and it gave me some useful adjustments that I am going to try. I will post back in a couple of day to let you know how it went. its real cols , so I wont be doing ant boating today. Thanks for the help. all of you tips I am going to be trying and checking . the plugs are are firing and are clean. they look great. Thanks again. the boat is pushing about 40 mph with no problem but I notice that there is a dead space between idle and full out. it doesn nothing in the middle at all. put it in gear and moves then a move it forward with about 3 inchs where it does no effect then it start to throttle up till full throttle which is about the last 2 inchs of the movment forward. that where it at full throttle. just dead space between idle and full throttle is what I mean. thanks for the advise. it helps me out a lot. Thanks

Re: Gas how much is normal and not?

Snook, The throttle operation you described is normal. That is the way MerControls work. With tthe motor off push the throttle all the way open and verify the carbs are all the way open. If you are getting 40MPH, it is very likely they are wide open.

Inspect the float, inlet needle and seat on the lower carb. It is not supposed to leak. The inlet needle either has some neopreme coating on it and uses a solid brass seat, or else it is plain stainless steel and the seat has a rubber center. If the neopreme is gone, or it has the rubber center in the seat, you might get a new inlet needle and seat. Also check the float for damage. The old foam floats disolved. The newer hard plastic floats could crack and sink. make sure the float height is set correctly.

Have a big question

Have a big question

I found a 24 ft sports craft for 800 dollars that is a big project. it has a 150 or 175 Johnson motor. he got it on a trade for some work he did for a person. anyway. Im going to try and post a few pics of it and I need to ask if you think its worth that with all the work it needs please he said the starter is out on the motor and was told that the only thing wrong with it that he knows. give me some of your views please and I have a 1/2 ton Dodge truck with a 318. would this truck be able to tow it as well? dang pictures are too big of a file. I could email you pics. I just really need to know if it would be worth the work and price.it has hydrolic steering.Thanks.

Hey Snook, Start a new thread.

BTW - I think the truck should pull that boat w/o issue. The power is not the limiting factor, normally it is the weight of the truck, vs the weight of the boat. Check the towing rating to be sure.

My wife's T-bird is rated for 3500# towing with a 3.8L V6.
