I just bought a Shell lake with an 18 horse evinrude fastwin. The first time i took it for a spin it wouldnt run unless you would pump the bulb constantly. I went and bought a new bulb assembly with the hoses and connectors and took it out that day it ran fine i let it sit over night the next day i tried to take it out and it was doing the same thing again. So i know its the bulb, i have been runing it while pumping the bulb the engine wants to run. I just pulled the hose off of the tank and engine and noticed the bulb was extreamly hard i couldnt squeeze it at all. I stuck a screw in both ends and pumped out about a pint of gas and noticed when it was all out i pulled the screws out and the bulb was easyier than ever to squeeze do i have to do this after every use to make sure the engine will run fine every time or can i fix it? Please i really would like any suggestions.

The bulb should remain relatively firm after pumping it up once.

Is your tank vented?

My tank is not vented it has a pressurized gas tank.

I'd guess both of you're bulbs are fine. Ventalition might be a problem as was already mentioned. Often when bulbs go bad, they won't pump fuel. You're able to manually pump fuel as needed to keep the motor running. This is a procedure that is often used to isolate a bad fuel pump. If the fuel pump isn't working, pumping a known good bulb/hose will provide enough pressure to keep it going.

Could also have a leak somewhere along the fuel supply line. Find any leaks while the bulb was pressurized?

There is no fuel pump on my engine the 71 evinrude its all pressurised from the tank forces fuel through the line into the carb. It has a fuel filter on the side of the engine that was bypassed before i got the engine witch is not the answer because the day i bought the new bulb it ran like a dream. I was starting to think i might have a bad float in the carb.
