Hows it floatin' boatin' buddies?

Tonight i replaced the coils, condensers, and points on my 1958 johnson 10hp. Ialso changed the gas ratio to 24:1. I then started it in a barrel- started right up and ran good. Just a couple of questions for you johnnyrude yodas -

1) I was told by my local dealer that you cannot hook a tach to this motor. Is this true and if not, where can I find it and how would I hook it up?

2) After disconnecting the air/fuel connector, the fuel side of the connector on the motor leaks gas back out of the motor. Just a little when vertical but more when horizontal(trimmed all the way up). Is this normal and if not, how do I fix it?

3) Lastly, it is supposed to be warmer up by me(mid 40's) this weekend and I'm thinking about finding a launch with enough open water to back the trailer in and test the motor under load. Is this close enough to having it off the trailer on open water to set the high and low mix settings? Because the water will be cold(around 33-36"F)and so will the air, will it run substantially different in spring/summer if I set it now? Also without a tach, how can I tell if the mix settings are close enough to optimum position? By the way it's running or sounds, or is there some zen-like trick?

Sorry, I know it's a lot of info. Thanks in advance for all your help the past few weeks I've been tackling my first real outboard project. Im almost ready for spring and I can't wait to really try this thing out!

Kevin

PS- I've been telling everyone that'll listen how great this site is and how much help you guys have been! Keep on trollin"! :p

Hi Kevin,
You could put an inductive tach on your motor. It's rated at 4000-revs and will run happily up to about 4500 - no more than that.
The dribble of fuel, post disconnect, is normal. If it bothers you, keep a rag handy to catch it.
Yes, putting a load on it at the ramp will be okay. Do the settings by ear. As you lean them out (turning clockwise), listen for a drop-off in rpm and then back them out 1/8-turn from that point - starting with the high speed first. It's always better to have it a hair rich than a hair lean...
- Scott

Check out www.tinytach.com they have the inductive type tachs and they work great. Nice & small too. You could put it on your motor cover.
