OK... what is the deal? Is this normal? On my 1959, 5.5... I took it off to make some repairs to the transom. I gently set it down on a packing blanket. It was resting on two points, the prop and the cowl pan ( on the spark plug side)... Can you picture that? I started working on the transom and smelled gas. It was leaking out from the motor and saturating the packing blanket near the cowls resting point. I picked it up, removed the cowl and there was gas in the cowl pan/tray. Obviuosly not a lot because it was disconnected from the tank, but enough to make it a mess. Is this normal? The reason I ask is that... when I tip my 1955 7.5 or my 1957 18, forward when mounted on the transom, they also leak gas. It is like they need to be kept at a certain degree of level or they will spill the gas in the carb. That makes sense to me, but what are the parameters? What is normal? Thanks. I have been told that people tip there motors up all the time and they don't leak... what is up? Thanks, Tom

Re: Gas Leak!!!

Normally, motors won't leak when simply tilted on the transom. However your pressure tank motors might if connected to the tank. OK, so it's a balancing act. How far can you tilt a glass of water before it slops out? Depends on how full it is. Same for a carb. Float level has a lot to do with it and also how good the float valve seals.

In your other example, setting it on the rear, of course the carb was horizontal (vertical, depending on how you think about such things) in that case. Back to the glass of water.
