gas line diameter matter?

So before I change my fuel pump I wanna replace the gas line. The current line is 1/4 inch. I cant find a connecter fitting w/ a 1/4 barb...somhow I cant get the 5/16 to fit either. So I was thinking about changing all my gas line to 3/8 inch. This way all the lines to my kicker and main engine are all the same (less extra to carry). Anything wrong with switch a gas line to a 9.9 merc from 1/4 to 3/8 inch?
Thanks!!

If the carb line from carb the fuel filter and fuel pump are 1/4 then it should n,t be a problem. If they are 3/8 inch then you risk losing pressure suplied to those areas due to restriction. you can go from bigger to smaller not smaller to bigger thats all

I dont understand. If the pump and carb lines are 1/4 and the "supply" line is 3/8, there should be more than enough fuel available right?

:facepalm::confused:

Oversized fuel line is never a problem.

Ok but when your engine starts running like it,s starving for fuel you,ll at least know why

While refurbishing my fuel system on my new/used boat i replaced everything from tank to engine, including installing cutout valves with 3/8 and no problems what-so-ever. Go for it.

1/4 inch socket is on the left, 3/8 inch socket is on the right....View attachment 94596

Which ones bigger?

How does a 3/8ths fuel line which is larger than a 1/4 inch fuel line cause a restriction?

My BBC on my Jet boat must really be restricted with all the 3/8ths fuel line I used. :rolleyes:

Number 1 flip the sockets around so you can see the difference between a 3/8 inch drive socket and a 1/4 inch drive socket. You know I have asked some really dumb/stupid questions from time to time,because at the time when dittling around it didnt seem that dumb/stupid.

They both look like 1/4" drive to me.

Fuel systems, and basically any other hydraulic system, or wire size, as a general rule of thumb: Bigger is OK, but smaller may cause problems.

I don't think there is a stupid question but take a look at some of the answers given to them.

Both sockets were 1/4 drive.....

The picture was taken of the socket opening to illustrate the difference between 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch as in relation to the size of a bolt head.
