About the only I know is make sure your up on plane. That is the most fuel efficient way to travel. I know how you feel, I have a 150.

All you can do is make sure the motor is running right you have the right prop and get it up on plane. Oh, yeah, once your on plane get your foot,,,errrr hand out of the throttle. Just keep it on plane.

Re: Gas mileage?

working copy.jpgresized55.jpgFor best gas mileage---leave it in the garage! LOL. Seriously, as stated above, you will acheive best mileage at "cruise" settings. At full throttle you can expect lousy mileage no matter what you do. My 125 on this boat goes through 15 gallons in about an hour at full throttle and 5900 RPM. 'Course, I don't have it set-up for best mileage, only high speed.

You can also be certain that the prop is good, with no large nicks or bends and sharp leading edges. AND, because stainless props generally run a couple of hundred RPM faster, a stainless prop will deliver slightly better fuel mileage at cruise settings. Be certain the trim setting is tilted for best efficiency at cruise speeds. Ruthlessly eliminate ANY excess weight and un-needed equipment. It costs you money to drag them around. Get a small girlfriend (or significant other) LOL.

You can also try raising the engine on the transom so the cavitation plate is about an inch above the hull bottom. This give less lower unit in the water and less drag. You need to experiment and be careful here, as too much height will cause the engine to ventilate.

Remember: Drag is your enemy. It causes you to use mare fuel to go a given distance. Be certain the hull is straight with no "hooks" or "rocker." Be sure it is clean and smooth. Remember, The less drag the whole boat has, the faster it will go at full throttle and the fuel efficience will be better at all speeds less than full throttle.

My 85 HP Force is an amazing gas hog. A little skiing or towing and it uses almost illegal amounts of gas. I love 2 strokes but man I don't know how people use them exclusively with gas as high as it is.

Re: Gas mileage?

THe only time I get good fuel mileage is when it's left on the lift. Even then, I think she still somehow drinks some. One thing about these 2 stroke, carbed motors is, they may be simple and easy to maintain, but they are big fans of the gas. It's the cost of having fun, pay the man and hush your mouth.....so-to-speak.

THe alternative is to buy a new 4 stroke for ....... $10,000 +

Thats about 20 years worth of gas for me.

Re: Gas mileage?

I filled my 30 gallon tank on my 18 foot sport 120 force and after a day on the river was astonished. Thirsty yes indeed!! But the problem was the gas gauge bounces so much can't really tell what the exact amount was trying to do the the third in third out third back rule. It appeared I had a quarter tank left so I took it in but once settled on the trailer had almost half!!

Re: Gas mileage?

They're gas hogs but you still want to verify your fuel diaphragm is not leaking fuel into the 3rd cylinder. The diaphragm is dirt cheap to replace way less than the gallons of fuel wasted if it is leaking.

Thanks for that information about the 3rd cylinder, will be checking that.

Re: Gas mileage?

Gotta know what RPM's at WOT???Size of the prop?17/19/??
My boat uses about 22 gal. when we fish. That's 2 motors.
We go about 30 -35 miles round trip.That's about 10-12 mi.out and moving around 5-10mi. and 10-12 mi.back.
The motors run about 53-5500 at WOT.With 17p props.I almost never run them more than 4000rpm's.
That's about 25mph and seems to get the best mileage.
Running any faster in my boat and in the ocean and it can BEAT you to DEATH!!!
I tried 19s and it went faster(3mph) and used about 15-25% more fuel.I removed them QUICK!!
My boat seems to get the same mileage when it carrys 1 person or 4 ????
Unload your boat.Anything you don't use take off the boat.
No reason to take ski's or tubes along when your fishing.
Anything you carry will cost you in the long run.
