Gas/Oil mixture

I recently bought a boat with a 68' Johnson 20horse. It starts up fine but man does it smoke! I ran it for about 10 minutes at idle, smoke didn't clear up any and it gets pretty bad when I give it gas. I was given the gas can with fuel left in it so I was hoping to start with fresh gas and right mixture, hoping that will solve the excessive smoking issues. Long story, but anyone know what the mixture ratio is? I also heard maybe synthetic? Thanks

Re: Gas/Oil mixture

If you have old gas in the can and dont know what it is dont use it! Make up a fresh mixture 50:1. If getting rid of the old stuff is problem then filter it and add back to the tank a little at a time. Use an outboard engine oil to TCW3 specification.

Yes it's 50:1 and try synthetic tcw3, you can get the Penzoil @ Walmart. It's biodegradable (better for the environment) and smokes less.
