Gas/Oil Ratio ??

The person who I purchased my 9.9 Johnson from, says he mixes his gas at 40-1. Is this correct?<br />This is my first outboard and I wouldn't want to ruin it. Sorry for asking what should be obvious to most people. Thanks<br /><br />Kerry

The 9.9 should be run with 50:1, Kerry.<br /><br />40:1 wastes oil and increases fouling, smoke and coking.<br /><br />Good luck.
