I have a 1949 Evinrude Elto speedster 12hp
and on the tag that gives the serial# and
model# it gives starting instructions and lubrication instructions.
For lubrication it says to add 1qt.oil to 1gal.of gas and after 4 hours to reduce to 1 pint oil to 1 gal. of gas. eveyone i tell this to says WOW!!
That seems like alot of oil to add to the gas..
I was wondering what everyone on this site thinks.
Thanks,L Watters

Re: Gas/Oil

That engine may be old enough it has plain bearings and requires 16-1 mixture.

Re: Gas/Oil

8:1 is pretty thick!
Using TCW-3 you ought to be able to go to 24:1 on that engine (1 quart per 6 gallons), but 16:1 won't hurt it.

Re: Gas/Oil

The instructions were correct. Break in at 4:1, then go to 8:1. If you used 30W motor oil, which is what we used in those days.

In 1964, OMC announced that all OMC engines made before 1964 should run 24:1 with outboard oil (TC-W3, today).

So, I agree with my friends above. You should be fine with a 24:1 mix, using TC-W3 certified oil.
