Gas has gone up $.20 a gallon in the last 10 days here on the SF Peninsula. 10 Days ago, Arco (the cheapest around), was $1.61 a gallon. Today it was up to $1.81 a gallon.

The sad part of it is, there several refineries on the east side of the bay, which have crude oil directly delivered to them by ship! Land transportation of the crude isn't nessary to help jack up the prices.

I have paid between 20 and 30 cents less a gallon in the Mojave desert, where there isn't a refinery within 200 miles.

Then to top that off, when the oil companies give their quarterly reports, they say they they are embarrassed that their profits increased so much, again.

:  ...Bob in Caliscrewya'...

Join the club...

It's been $1.71 + here for a while now.

They are blaming it on a refinery up North shut down for maintenance.

H.

Hi guys, this will cheer you up. I just fueled up on the way home at $4.80 a gallon!! (And yes, I did convert from UK gallons to US gallons.)

Makes for pretty expensive boating over here in the UK!!!

Maybe it is because since the invasion of Irak, there are no more rogue nations selling oil anymore. The big US oil companies have a monopoly and complete strangle hold on the oil prices

Oh, and by the way, there's a 26% price increase for gas bought at marinas, boat yards and fuel barges etc. Except that some marinas won't allow you to fuel your own boat, so you're stuck with really crazy gas prices!

Just out of interest, do you have to pay extra for gas at marinas in the US?

I've never bought gas from a marina, so I don't know what they charge.

I always fill at the station and keep a couple of 5 gallon cans in the back of the truck, or in the back of the boat (depending on my trip)

H.

Gas prices here are exactly where they were in September of 2000.
$1.71 a gallon for mid-grade, $1.81 for premium.

Or if I drive a mile further and buy at the co-cop, its $1.71 for premium. :)

Re: Gas price gouging has begun.......

From what I understand, the middle east oil prices are tied to the US Dollar. Due to the decline of the value of the dollar. The "sandy boy's" have raised the price of oil, so the dollar amount per barrel will reflect parity with other currency's, such as the Euro. Example....When the Euro's first came out, each Euro was worth apx. $0.85 US. The Euro now exchanges for apx. $1.25 US, thus the higher cost of crude per barrel.

A Shell station, near the Arco station, was up to $1.93 a gallon for regular, with mid-grade at $2.03 and preium at $2.13 a gallon, and it's only February. :(

The high cost isn't tied to heating oil prices here, as heating oil is little used here. Natural gas and electricity are the most used for heating and cooking, with propane in a distant third place.

...Bob in Caligougeya'...

We live in a capitalist soceity,we also adhere to the laws of the free market. In many instances, supply and demand will dictate the prices which you pay for products. When oil producing nations cut back on production, it allows them to get more dollars per barrel of oil therefore at our end the prices sky rocket. Then there are times when the production levels are stable, but prices still go up. Thats when the refineries decide to cut back on their production or they're forced to convert a larger amount of imported oil into heating oil, because of unforseen weather events, though some may say shortsighted planning
is the cause. However in the mean time we are constrained to dig ever deeper into our shallowing pockets. :(

Elmer all of what you say is true according to the rules of ideal micro economics. All other factors being equal.Except only consumers live by those rules. Producers control the environment.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Price and demand. The only thing around here that fluctuates more than oil prices is the temperture!

I can see heating oil being a big demand during the winter, but to jump the price by leaps and bounds? Now come on. Diesel around is more than gas by 10 to 15 cents.

When summer is hot and soda pop and ice cream are in demand, the price of it doesn't change several times in a week.

It urkes me alot to know the foreign suppliers have billions of our dollars that are just sitting there. Look at all the money that Saddam had.

If you have too much to spend and don't know what to do with it, then your just a greedy, non-compasionte person in my eyes.

Someone needs to invent a car that runs on your junk mail!

Re: Gas price gouging has begun.......

lol roscoe
but i dont like spam.fuel prices around here are running about $1.42 to $1.60 per gallon i know its lower than in most other states but on average we make less money per capita.our state just announced that we will be ooking at a tax increase soon going from a 16 cent per gallon sales tax to a 23 cent per gallon.their plan is to use "most" of the money to repair bridges and roads.the rest will go to misc expenses.there is an overpass here which has been down to 1 lane for over a year.but no work has been done on it.an uncle of mine works for the department of transportation here and says there is nothing wrong with the bridge.they simply closed it down to get the public to complain about it so it will be easier to pass the new tax bill.an agreement between the state tax commision and the dept of transportation.and just wanted to throw this in folks.whatch your presidential candidates.particularly the one (not stating any names)who wants to raise the minimum wage.if this is done all products and services will increase in price as well so that the cost is passed on to the public.and for those who make more than the intended increase will likely not recieve a raise to compensate.therefore you wages will effectivly be reduced if not directly.overall a raise in minimum wage will not help the people or the economy at this point it will only hurt it and drive us into repression.as if we havent been in one for how many years now?vote how you want just pay attention to what is being said you future and that of your children and grand children will depend on your belief

Don't forget the Strategic Oil Reserve. That's a big investment account for the oil resellers. They start to fill er up when there is too much supply in order to keep prices up and then sell it off AFTER the prices have reached gougeing proportion! Everytime some fear of oil shortage arises, not an actual shortage, they pump that thing dry and make big bucks while the high prices are in place. More welfare for the wealthy!
