Everytime I fill up the gas tank on my boat it dribbles gas out of the vent hole while filling and also spews out right as the tank hits full and the filler stops. What could be causing this and how can I fix it? Thanks.

Aaron

Fill slower or make sure the vent hose has a loop in it.

It seems to do this no matter how slow I fill the tank. Where exactly should this loop be?

You can buy the little plastic jugs with suction cups that fit right under the vent to catch the gas.Very inexpensive and they do work well.Don't know about Australia but around here a lot of places won't even give you gas unless you have one.Enviromental issues.

I'm in Melbourne, Florida, not Australia :D Here we pump our own gas so there is no one to check things like that. I am going to see if I can gain access to that vent line and find the loop you are referring to. Thanks.

Mine does the same! I don't fill it up anymore...a full tank of gas slows down my boat anyway! :D

Re: Gas spewing from vent hole

I took the boat apart enough where I could get to the vent line to check it out today. There aren't any kinks in the line that I can see. There also is not any kind of loop like was mentioned. Is this something that all boats should have? Is it as simple as just bending the vent line into a loop? I don't think it would be long enough to do and I would need to replace the line. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The line does not have to have a loop. It just cannot have any sags where fuel can puddle.

I could be wet behind the ears but...I believe the loop is to prevent the possibility of water backing up thru vent line outlet into gas tank.

Re: Gas spewing from vent hole

tystick is Exactly Right........
The Vent line Should run from the Hull Vent Fitting, Up in a Loop, then Down to the Tank......
This way, When water splashes into/onto the Vent Fitting, the Water drains Back out the Fitting,+ Not down into the Tank.........

Unfortunately,
It'll do Nothing to help with the Gas Over-flow Problem............
Either fill it Slower....
Not as Full......
Or get a Recoverery Bottle.......

Re: Gas spewing from vent hole

Having that loop does sound like a good idea. I'm not sure why I don't have one already. So there really is nothing I can do to prevent the gas from coming out the vent? It seems like this would be a common enough problem there should be some cure.

Re: Gas spewing from vent hole

did you make sure the vent line is not blocked up from the tank fitting side by blowing out?
