Gas tank floats?

Can't get a answer down in Mercury motors.

I have a new 30hp 4 stroke. It has a small 6.6gal tank, I'm on my fourth sending unit. It seems after about a month the little foam gets gas in it and
dose not work right. Don't know it the gas or the Sta-bil I add. Any
ideas? Was thinking of getting a small brass float and put it on the end.

Are you getting all the replacements from the same source? Maybe the manufacturer has a problem. Try a different brand and you may get a better result.

It's under warranty so I been going back to the dealer. He's been taking a sending unit out of a new tank and putting it in mine.

6.6 gallon tank sounds like a top-side portable. If it is, they are not known for their gauge accuracy, and you can usually 'see' the level just by looking at the tank. I'd stop spending money on sending units, etc., and just monitor it visually. 6.6 isn't a large amount of gas, so you should have a basic idea of how long it will last.

It is a top side tank, but this is my first boat and after paying good money
you would think it would last more then a month! All they would had to do is put in a better float probably would have cost them a buck or two.

Even the dash mounted fuel gauges with below deck fuel cells are 'pretty accurate' at best. Just remember the Golden Rule of Fuel Management; 1/3 out, 1/3 back, 1/3 reserve. Follow that, and you'll never run out of fuel.
