I'm replacing the below deck gas tank on my 17' proline center console (18 gallons) I believe maybe I can fit a 30 gallon below delow deck one.Is this a good idea? Will the weight (7 Pounds a gallon) effect bouyancy, preformance, planing that drastically? Any thoughts?

Re: Gas tank replacement

I would not think that change in weight will be a factor. We are talking 12 gal X 8 pounds/gal = 96 pounds. So you added the weight of a young teenager to a 17 footer.

I presume you will still have enough foam floatation?

Re: Gas tank replacement

Sorta depends on how far you go, how much gas you need, but I doubt you'll ever notice any difference in weight or performance. With the ethanol and the way gasoline can get stale or degrade do you really want 30 gallons of gas in the tank? My son's boat has a 52 gallon tank with a 115HP 4 stroke, seems like a 20 gallon tank would be more than enough and it's bound to cost something just dragging around all that extra gas, getting stale in the tank. It's just something to think about. Good Luck!
