Can someone please explain the vent on a portable gas tank? Is it supposed to be open or closed when the engine is running? When are you supposed to close it?

Close it to keep the gas in when you're bounding down the road. Open it to let air in when you're bounding across the lake.

If you don't open it when you are running the engine, then you create a vacuum in the tank. That will stall your engine and probably damage the fuel pump.

Not to mention caving in your gas can, and starving the engine, leaning it out and burning it down.

PLEASE don't forget to open the vent.:D
