I couldn't find the stupid question section so I'll just post here. I have 9 outboards all have a carb on one side and the spark plug on the other side with the piston in the middle. The stupid question is "How does the gas get to the spark plug?"

Re: gas to spark plug

You need to do a Google or yahoo search on "Two Cycle Engine Operation". The short version however is that two stroke engines do not have valves like your car. On the up stroke of a two stroke engine, vacuum is created in the crankcase so fuel is drawn through the carb into the crankcase. On the down a stroke port (hole in the side of the cylinder) through which the fuel was drawn in is closed by the skirt on the piston thus compressing that charge. At the bottom of the stroke another port is opened above the piston and the fuel charge rushes into the cylinder and at the same time forces out remaining exhaust gases from the previous combustion process. As the piston continues up the exhaust port is closed and compression of the fuel charge continues until the plug ignites the charge and the resulting bang forces the piston down after which the process repeats. A two stroke engine provides power on every revolution of the engine whereas a four-stroke (suck, squeeze, bank, and blow) requires two revolutions to complete one power cycle.

That four cycle description sounds more like a dream date, than an engine description.....
