Gasket sealent

I have a Mercury 35HP that is leaking water around the spark plugs. It's obvious the cover for the water jacket is leaking. I am going to replace that gasket and was wondering if someone can recommend a sealent to use with that gasket. I come from the auto industry and it's common to use Permatex. Can I use the same here or is there another product for marine engines? Thanks

Re: Gasket sealent

We us lock tite 514 or 518 around the plugs, use a straight edge and be sure the gasket surface around the plug area on the plate is loaded about .005 to .010 to help with the leaking

What does this mean? I just need to know if I need to use a gasket sealant on this water jacket cover.

Thanks

Re: Gasket sealent

The bosses on the filler block cover around the spark plugs should patirude out .005 to .010 from the surface of the plate to preload the gasket and help it to not leak

Re: Gasket sealent

Hey laddiesservice what about locktite 515? I happen to have a new tube that I got from somewhere. I will be assembling a complete L6 115HP in the next couple of weeks and I was planing on using permatex black, because I have had good success with it in the past, but I don't know anything about the locktite 515?
thanks Jon

Re: Gasket sealent

jheron, from the loctite 515 datasheet:
Chemical: Gasoline
Temperature: 22°C
% strength @500 hours exposure: 20%
% strenght @1000 hours exposure: 15%

From the Permatex Black technical datasheet:

Chemical / Solvent Resistance
The product retains effective properties in contact with automotive fluids, such as motor oil, transmission fluids, alcohol and antifreeze solutions. Note: Not recommended for parts in contact with gasoline.

Neither of these sound to me like something I would want to use on a 2-stroke outboard, except perhaps for water jacket covers. 514 on the other hand has excellent resistance to fuels.

EDIT: Laddiesservice posted while I was typing away. I use Permetex #2 and #3 (thinner aviation stuff with a brush in the cap) a lot too.
