Gasket set question - OMC 165 Stringer

I'm in the process of doing the head gasket (1st timer) and have got everything taken apart. Head is about to go to the shop to be machined (valves too) and I think THIS is the gasket set I need. Correct?

Also - in that set are two gaskets that go under the rocker arm covers (if I've got it right). Should I change those since I have the manifold (gee, ain't that heavy?) off right now? Or is it a "if it ain't broke" part?

Suggestions welcome - thanks as always.

Not sure about your second question, but I can help you find the correct gasket kit if you post the model of your engine. Should be either JUFM-10C, JUFM-10S, WUFM-10C OR WUPM-10C.

If this is an in-line six (GM) then there is only ONE valve cover gasket which is the cover on top of the engine. There are two separate covers on the side of the engine which provide access to the hydraulic lifters. Those are side covers. Look at it this way -- will you ever have a better chance to replace those gaskets? The answer is NO! Replace them and replace them correctly.

He is talking about the side covers.. and here is a question for your question.. Are they currently leaking or seeping? If yes.. replace them - if no.. you might end up with them leaking or seeping if you replace them... I would never replace a perfect seal if it doesn't have to be done.. just because you have the gasket doesn't mean you have to use it.. now... see if you can get the head back on and push rods in without needing to take off those side covers...

Sorry guys - I've never dug into an engine this far before, so I'm just nervous about doing it right ... and consequently being something of a baby about it all  ...

Sorry - JUFM-10S

It's the side covers (sorry for the confusion Silvertip), and they are not showing any sign of leaking at all. I've got everything torn down (head's going to the shop on Monday), and the manual doesn't mention ANYTHING about those covers in the process (but the gaskets seem to be in all of the head "kits") - which is why I'm asking. Getting to them later is actually not too big a deal. I'm not even sure I'd have to take the intake/exhaust manifold off again to do it.

Picking up the head today. They did the valves, replaced several springs and machined everything. Looks like the overheating problem I had earlier this year effected the head. Anyway - they've pressure tested it and say it's as good as new. I'll start putting it all together tomorrow night ...
