gauges not reading correct

just bought 2005 Bass Tracker with 25 hp Mercury 4 stroke. MPH gauge did not register at all and rpm seemed to be reading high and jumping all over the place. At 3/4 throttle was at 5000rpm but motor was not pushed at all and ran just fine. In fact I was amazed at how easy it started and how quiet it ran.

just had it serviced and tach just needed adjustment and water blown out of tube on speedometer. both are working great now. had boat out for 3 days last weekend and it ran great. 4 stroke gets amazing gas mileage and runs so quiet.

  • MPH gauge did not register at all
  • rpm seemed to be reading high and jumping all over
Taken altogether this sounds like the classic symptom of a loose ground wire for the gauges.

Take a stiff piece of wire and clean out the speedo hole on the front of the lower leg.
