Gear box or prop?

I am experiencing problems picking up speed and the prop feels like it is cavatating, however this is in a straight line with the trim down.

I am used to the cavatating if you are turning quickly with the ringos on the back but this is in clear deep water. The engine is revving freely but the prop is not biting, could this be a gear box problem.

I have a little play 1 inch in the prop when in gear before the gear box stops and then about 1/2 inch without the nut turning the prop is a stainless vengance

Best discription is a auto car with the bands slipping

Any thoughts before i hand it over the the main dealer

You need to scribe two marks on the prop hub, run the engine up(in the water) and check to see if you're spinning the hub,(marks won't be lined up anymore) if so you need prop rehubbed.

I have a 1999 5.2 Haines Signature bowrider with a 135 Mercury and a vengance prop. Dont know if Haines is a make outside Oz but it is a ocean going f/glass. Engine is the same age and has 300 hours on the clock

I have spoken with a dealer this end who has suggested that it may well be the rubber bushes. We discussed the fact that if i ease off and take it up slowly that the prop will catch which he says is a sign of the bushes failing. Your thoughts.

He also said that some older props the bushes are no longer available and i may need to buy a new prop. I will look into the model and get back to you.

I will dig out some photos with the Perth skyline...
