Joe I want to stress Im not an expert on Mercs.<br /> Basically the forward and reverse gears are in<br />constant mesh with the drive shaft gear.There is a shift dog between the gears splined to the prop. shaft. It slides back and forth to engage<br />the dogs on the gears for forward and reverse.<br /> Hope this helps.
