The gearcase is the bullet-shaped casting from which the propeller shaft exits. It generally includes the entire casting, including the skeg (vertical fin below the bullet) and cavitation plate (horizontal fins above the bullet)...<br /><br />The large gearcase had a bigger head-on profile than the small gearcase. The small gearcase was typically faster, but was better suited for lightweight hulls as the gears inside were also smaller (less durable in heavy use applications).<br /><br />- Scott
