After taking my upper gear housing off the little aluminum damn fell right out on the floor. Looking in the manual (Page 3A-47) it says there was an update to a rubber filler plug. Does anyone have that part number? I found replacement aluminum ones and mines paint is flaking and tired. If the rubber one is better i would like to replace it now. I cant seem the find the rubber one on anyone's websites.

If not it says to apply sealant along the top of the damn and also the sides, does everyone basically seal all 4 sides when you install it?

I believe my Manual #14 recommends switching to the rubber version. Google the p/n. I saw some for <$10

After looking back at it tonight I was wrong. I do have the rubber wall in the lower half of the unit.

The service manual doesn't seem to talk about the upper one. It's an aluminum wall peice that was just sitting in there and fell out when I lifted it out. Is there anything special when putting that one back in? Should it be held in by silicone?

Sorry. I'm lost now. Is your drive an Alpha I Gen II or earlier? I'm good with the Gen 2's, useless with earlier versions.
Do you have a pic of the part that fell out? I'm summoning the sage now: achris ?

No dams in earlier drives. Aluminium in early Gen 2s, changed to rubber around 1999...

It's a gen 2. It part #9 in this diagram.

I think it's what rests on the rubber damn in the upper half. It looks like it just slides in to the groove like the bottom damn but nothing seems to hold it in. It looks like a pain to hold in place when I go to assemble the drive. Doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the service manual.

Now I remember. It's a filler wall. Mine stays put so I didn't remember it. When I remove the prop shaft housing I remove the complete out drive. When I rejoin the two halves I set the drive shaft hsg. on it's top, and lower the prop shaft hsg. onto it. It's easier to line up the water pump tube and lower drive shaft.

RTV or Permatex Aviation Gasket (aka Merc 'Perfect Seal') will tack it in place. I also dab a little Av gasket on the tiny quad ring seal for the lube passage. It's a bummer to have to re-split the drive when it fails vacuum/pressure test because that seal fell out.
