hi all, i just got my dad's 72 trisonic. it's a mercrusier 165 IO. mercrusier I-R drive i think. it wasn't cooling so i replaced the impeller. now i'm haveing the fun of putting it back together. seems that is hard to line up. i got the remote in forward, i got the shift shaft in forward and can spin the prop counter clockwise to rotate the drive shaft. after many trys finally got it line up and in. now it won't shift into N. I'm thinking that shift shaft got out of gear again for the fact that prop spins free now in Fwd. gonna try again when it quits raining here. also am wondering about the uppper shift shaft. is the fact that it has 3/4" of vertical play OK? gavity just drops it down. aslo am wondering about makeing sure that i have it in proper when i do push it up and feels like it is seated. coter key hole is fore and aft. could I be 180 out? it only seems to seat best one direction, i'm assuming the proper direction.

zsd, are you a david bowie fan? be sure you have the shift shaft tabs lined up. these are external, in front of the lower/upper unit, close to where the two attach. you can see them if you look in front of the outdrive. if they don't connect, the shift will not work.

Re: gear housing install blues

thanks folks for the help, but the problem persists. and is getting worse by the minute. now i will take blame for ruining the 2 oil seals that the drive shaft slides into on the gear assy. now i'm gettin up into the drive shaft housing, hopeing not though. question is can the seals be replaced from the outside or does the drive shaft houseing have to come apart to go replace them? from the diagram i have looks like it's comeing apart, ugh, really learnin the hard way. thanks.... jim
