Re: gear housing removal help!

I've never taken the lower unit off of an Evinrude, but I took the one off my 1985 Mercury 150 HP.

It came off easily enough, but it was real tough getting it back on again. It took two of us almost an hour to get it to line up just right.

Hopefully someone with Evinrude experience will be able to help you out a little more.

Do you have a repair manual?

Good Luck,

Calvin

If it is like my 1988 V4 it is a very do-able job. Besides the bolts on the lower unit you have to disconnect the shift linkage. The shift rod is fastened to the powerhead with a 3/8" or 7/16" bolt right below the carbs in front of the powerhead when viewed from the starboard side of the engine.

Suggest you put in a new impeller in the water pump while you are at it.

Easy to do......the hardest thing is to disconnect the shift shaft from the lever under the lower carb.

>disconnect the shift lever (spring pin or bolt that holds the lever in place)
>remove the 7 bolts that secure the leg onto the driveshaft housing (one bolt is hid under the trim tab)
>with any luck, the leg will drop down with a tap or two..... :)
