I have a 1971 mercruiser outdrive that was apart when I pick-up the boat. From reading in this forum I know it needs to be in the right gear and I can tell what gear its in and I can change that gear. What I have not found is what position the gear linkage needs to be positioned at. The tab in front is it pointed to the front, side or back?

When you say 'apart'... How 'apart'? Completely disassembled or just split into the two halves?

Re: gear linkahge position?

Turn the prop-shaft CCW and the lower shift shaft CW. Then align the intermediate shift shaft (the one in the upper half of the drive) so the shoe on the top faces forward. Put the two halves together, and while it's still in forward gear (first part of what I said puts the drive in forward gear) and the shift control is also in forward gear, put the drive on the bell housing.

Chris..........

Have a look at this video for drive installation. -> Installing Mercruiser Alpha drive - YouTube
