Gear Lube for 1999 Merc 25ELF

I have a 15 year old Mercury Marine 25ELF engine on my boat. I have been changing out the gear lube yearly with what the local marine store has recommended: Mercury High Performance Gear Lube+ (SAE 90). The 32 oz bottle is running down and I purchased Quicksilver Premium Gear Lube for lower units below 75 hp (SAE 80W-90). But the fine print on the Quicksilver bottle says “do not mix with Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube or any other gear lubricants”. Is this to be taken literally?

That warning to not mix the "premium" with the "high performance", has been on their labels for years.

They don't want you to mix them.

I'm not a chemist, so for a more detailed reason, email Mercury and ask them, or ask Walter White.

Take the bottle back and swap it out.
