After reading a previous posting I think I know why lube is put in from the bottom with the top plug out...to release air bubbles? But can I simply take out the top plug to check lube level?<br /><br />Thanks.

Re: Gear Lube level

You have it right, unless you have one of the newer legs with a small oil bottle inside the boat. On the older style legs the oil should come up to the vent hole on top. If it's almost full you can top it up from the top with a syringe. Its also good to crack the lower hole and let a little oil drain out to check for water (the oil gets milky).

Re: Gear Lube level

Sounds good. Thanks. Another question. I read this on another post.<br /><br />"Tilt clutch, drain from drain hole in bottom of tilt clutch. Also remove fill plug from port side of tilt clutch. Tilt clutch in on port side of outdrive but attached to intermediate housing. Fill with 30 weight or 10-30 weight engine oil from the drain hole until run out fill plug. Put in fill plug then remove pump and install drain plug. Check level from fill plug."<br /><br />Is it ok you use gear lube here? That is what the local boat mechanic said to do.
