Just really trying to get an understanding of how the Gear Lube monitor works. Have a 1997 5.7 merc. The gear lube monitor will be slightly below the "Add Line". I trying to understand, the volume difference between the "Full line" on the monitor and the "Add line" on the monitor is probably 3 oz. When the entire stern drive take about 4 quarts, how is letting the gear lube monitor going below the add line really putting the stern drive at risk? Thanks, probably an obvious answer but trying to understand the system.

The gear lube tank allows you to see if the unit is loseing oil

While you might have to add a bit after changeing the oil if it is allways going down there is a leak

Before the tank if you boat was in the water there was NO way to check the oil and you do not have to lose much oil to kill the upper gear set

because with the rocking of the boat, when the tank gets low it can get air in the line, thus when the unit needs oil, it gets air. this is the reason they recommend, when changing the fluid, you fill from the lower unit, until you pump oil into the tank, then you can top the tank off.
