Gear Lube Monitor won't flow into outdrive.

Hello,

I have a 2006 Mercruiser 3.0 with a Alpha I Gen II Drive system. I bought the boat last spring so this winter was the first time doing all the maintenance. Part of my winterization process in the fall was to drain the gear oil out of the drive and remove the lower unit from the boat. I do this for a few reasons, but mainly so I don't have to worry about it sitting in a few feet of snow since it's so close to the ground when trimmed down.

Anyways, I re-installed the lower unit yesterday, after a new impeller and a passing pressure test. After filing it with gear oil to the vent hole from the drain plug with a pump (per the manual), I proceeded to add oil to the gear lube monitor but didn't get any flow. After giving it about an hour to do something (I thought maybe it was too cold to flow) nothing happened.

There is a disconnect about halfway between the monitor tank and the outdrive housing, so I took it off there and found there to me some debris in the hose between the fitting and the tank so I blew air through it and got it all cleared out. I then blew some air from the quick connect into the outdrive and that was perfectly clear. So I re-installed the monitor and could easily blow air form the tank into the lower unit (since the top vent plug it out I can hear the air coming out).

So now I thought I fixed it for sure. Nope, I filled the tank back up and it wouldn't flow into the drive.... let it sit for half hour or so and still nothing coming out of the vent screw. I even tried lightly pressurizing the tank to get it to flow and I got a little bit, but not much. I even checked to make sure that the monitor tank is the highest point in the system and it is at least 6" higher than any point of the hose and probably 12-18" higher than the top of the outdrive...

Anybody have any ideas to why this is happening? At this point I figure that the drive is full to the vent screw (which is where it would be without the darn monitor) so maybe if I run it for a while the expansion/ contraction of the oil with force it to flow and work out any air in the line.

Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,....... If you leave it overnight, the bottle will be empty, 'n there'll be a big oil stain on the floor,.....
It's not meant to flow, Quickly,.....

The choke point of the system, is the crud that can gather in the bottom of the bottle,.....

That said, put the vent screw in, 'n continue to pump oil in, til it's at the full line on the bottle, then go Boatin',.....
After runnin' a few times, it may, or may not burp, 'n need maybe another ounce in the bottle to get back to the full line,....

Its gear lube and it doesn't flow very well through the small tube. The lube will flow as the boat is used. Pressure builds with use from heat, and the air will make it to the bottle and the lube will move into the drive. Your drive will be fine

thanks for the replies. That makes me feel better, the 45 degree temp yesterday probably didn't help either.

I'm in Durham, so I mostly boat out of Casco Bay, but make my way up to that region to do some diving every now and then!

Hi. Perfectly normal. Also worth knowing that sometimes crud builds up at the bottom of the tank and can block after years.
I drain mine right down every year overnight. Then do exactly what you did.
then after I’ve used the boat for a few hours the next day the level will drop and have to be topped up. Sometimes even need to do it again after another few runs out. Then it settles.
