Gear Lube Reservoir Hose Leaking

I have noticed a puddle of oil directly under my drive. Further investigating the hose that comes from the reservoir is leaking gear oil seems like the hose is dry rotted.

I was able to fill the reservoir up and within 24 hours its completely empty and laying all over the ground. A few weeks ago when I winterized I drained the gear lube and it was full without any water.

Is it possible to change this hose without removing the drive?

Re: Gear Lube Reservoir Hose Leaking

Hi there, No you should not have to remove the drive to replace the gear lube oil hose. Both sides will have a hose barb fitting so that you can remove the old hose. It will be easier to slice the old hose at the fittings so that you don't have to work so hard at getting the hose off of the fittings.

Starting with page 4A-46 should help walk you through it.

Though this should not affect your 1996 year. The bulkhead fitting at the gimbal housing may be of plastic material depending on year and serial number of the later model transom assemblies. The plastic material is easily broken when pulling off the old hose. So carefully splicing it near the fitting should make it a bit easier to remove.

For the material change over see bulletin below,

You will need to order item number 7, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...=1942&bnbr=230&bdesc=OIL+RESERVOIR+COMPONENTS

Hope this helps, good luck.:)
