Gear lube sprayed into port side of engine compartment

While out on the lake yesterday our 5.0 alpha 1 Gen 2 started making a noise under light load. When we opened the engine compartment lube had been sprayed onto the port side of the engine compartment. Have had no issues with this boat before. Changed impeller and lube at beginning of season. Been out every weekend without issues.

Drained outdrive and lube was clear ( not milky). Did have a few metal shavings on drain plug.

90 degree fitting from lube monitor is intact.

Any suggestions?

should be no pressure in the system unless you cap to reservoir is plugged and won't let breath. Should got alarm. You say port side, was it sprayed in towards the back, the front, lube oil reservoir, the power steering pump. help out a little bit....

The lube seems to be coming from the lower area near the back, not from the monitor reservoir.

at most it would have to be gravity flow from reservoir. The level in reservoir fluctuates with lube temperature assuming all the air is out. Follow the remote lube line all the way to transom must have rubbed a hole in it or was cut.

Not correct.
Cap has check valve on it. Holds pressure in, but allows air in so there isn’t a vacuum.

Check the cap for missing or damaged gasket.

Red gasket is in place. Line does not appear cut or worn. 90 degree fitting at transom is intact.

the lube I drained out was approximately 30 oz.

With drive and bottle full of lube.
Remove level check plug and install gearcase pressure tester.
Start adding pressure until you find the leak.
Don't exceed 15 psi

Muc,

By level check plug, do you mean the vent plug at the top of the outdrive?

yes, relieve any pressure in bottle before removing the plug and again before removing the pressure tester.
don't do it like I did, learn from my mistakes!

Muc,

Tried pressurizing the outdrive before adding back fluid. Would not hold any pressure at all.

Removed outdrive. Metal shavings around driveshaft. Gear lube in bellows. Shaft has a lot of play going into sterndrive.( can’t upload video). Shavings are from inside of retainer ring.

Is this a repair a DIYer can do or do you need too many specialized tools?

reason lube everywhere is you pulled out the gimbal lube check valve. that thing sticking out your drive should be mounted in the gimbal. that connects to the hose going to your remote reservoir. that hose popped off, gear lube dripped on spinning shaft and sprayed oil everywhere. How the heck would metal get on outside of drive and be from drive. You either have bad u joints, bad gimbal bearing or its not metal.

so you fried outdrive when lube oil line came off "ck valve" surprised alarm didn't go off when level dropped in remote reservoir.
