Gear lube?

I have a 6 H.P. 1991 Evinrude & a 70H.P. 1991 Johnson motor. I live in Michigan where the water temps on our lakes run from 68 degrees down to 46 degrees during my boat fishing season. What vascocity lower unit oil should I use in each of the two motors? Thanks!

Oil / lubrication always presents lively arguments.-----Use BRP ---HI-VIS ----in both motors.-----Oil is cheaper than gears / bearings.

Does the Hi-Vis BRP oil come in a variety of weights (viscocity) or is the HI-VIS just one weight as in 80W90 or as in 90 W 115 or 75 W 140 or does Hi Viscocity mean just that HI-VIS that only comes with one weight? Also, what does the BRP stand for?

BRP = Bombardier Recreational Products (Current maker of Evinrude motors)

I sse no problem using the Hi-Vis in any water that isn't frozen. Evinrude knows some of their motors will be used there.

"Hi Vis" is the OMC/ BRP registered name.

You can use any reputable brand of outboard gear oil . but there is no need to use a "high performance" oil in a 6 hp . A "premium" grade will be suitable

Typically they are 80W-90 but it is not always stated on the label

Avoid oils that are equivalent to "Type C". They are for electric shift models

I knew that one about the type "c". I used to have an electric shift motor on my old boat that had to use the type "c" oil.

The 91 model 6 HP uses the drive balls and not a clutch dog.-----The gears on the 6 HP are expensive if available at the dealer.-----Just supplied a dealer with a used gearcase because thrust bearing above pinion failed..-----Use the best oil for it.-----BRP oil HI-VIS is your best option !

Thanks. I bought some today to drain and refill the lower units tomorrow. I will be fogging the motors and putting fuel stabilizer in the tank with a full tank of Premium gas to sit for about 4-5 moths here in Michigan. Will run the motors after putting the stabilizer in the tank long enough to fill the carb bowls with the stabilized gas.
