What would cause the normally gold color gear oil to turn green? Water or foaming because it is the wrong oil? My bet is water.

Re: Gear Oil Again

I've never heard of a gold colored gearlube. Perhaps another tech will educate me on that issue.

What is the model number of that engine?

Re: Gear Oil Again

You could describe the color of gear oil as gold but straw or deep straw might be closer. It's not normally green but there's no reason why a particular brand should not be. If it is turning green in use then it suggests corrosion of copper alloys.

CRC Hi-Vis.....Gold in color. If it has water in it,it will turn a tan milkshake color. Not green..
The CRC is supposed to be direct replacement for the OMC Hi-vis.

Re: Gear Oil Again

I put 85w 140 Valvoline gear oil in the lower unit. It had NONE when I checked it after a resent purchase. My Selco book did not indicate what oil to use so I filled with this. I was trouble shooting another problem (clutch dog). I did notice the dog is clad copper of a sort. The worn areas show copper. So I tend to lean towards the copper in the mix theory posted earlier. If anyone has any idea what weight oil to put into an 83 Johnson, I would be glad to hear it. Sorry for wasting anyones time.

Re: Gear Oil Again

As long as it is brand name marine high viscosity gear oil you should be OK.

The color of gear oils is like the color of TC-W3 oil, they are colored so that the distributor can identify the manufacturer of the oil.

In addition to the milky look of water intrusion, black oil is worn out oil and if it smells like it is burned, it is also worn out.

Drain that and put GL5 rated marine gear lube in. 85W-140??,never heard of it.
The 83 Johnson also calls for the OMC Hi-Vis gear lube.
Even Walmart lower unit lube would be better than automotive..
Get rid of that Seloc book and buy a real manual..

Re: Gear Oil Again

Valvoline has a GL-5 full synthetic high viscosity gear oil that should satisfy most users. See the following: http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=58

It doesn't make sense that Valvoline make an outboard gear lube, Valvoline Outboard EP Gear Oil, if their Full Synthetic Gear Oil would suffice.

If you compare the descriptions of the two, you'll see that each has properties specific to it's intended use.
