Hello, again. I have a 1966 80 HP Johnson Super Sea-Horse Electomatic outboard.
1. I just noticed that there is gear lube (at least thats what it smells like) dripping from the prop shaft. Can I still use the boat for short test runs? and what do I need to fix, and how hard a job will it be? I have ordered a service manual for this motor, but it will take a couple of weeks yet to get.

2. How should the outboard be positioned for towing to and from the lake?

pvisser,

You can run it around a bit until you figure out where the leak is coming from. Just make sure it is always full.

The best way to tow is with the motor in the vertical position (down). However, some trailers do not offer enough ground clearance for the foot of the motor.

In that case, get a transom saver. They are available at: www.cabelas.com

pvisser

If, (and that's if) it is gear oil, it could be from the propshaft behind the propeller or other seals(Fill/drain, ect). Remove the prop and wipe down all areas it could be leaking and check it again later to verify where it's coming from. Has it been run in the water lately? Check the gear lube for water intrusion.(Milky) You can run it briefly if you change the gear lube before and after using it. Just be sure to drain it again when you get back and repair the cause as soon as possible. The motor should be towed in the tilted position with a transom saver attached to the lower unit to carry the weight and prevent stress on the transom.

But is is better to have it straight, or turned sharp? I'm just worried about the old steering linkage.

Straight would be the best, but if you have to turn it, it will be fine.

pvisser,

Straight is best. I've always used a bungee cord to keep it straight. I loop it through the steering wheel and then attach it to something that won't move.
