gear oil for 95 omc/volvo outdrive

Hi,
I have a 1995 four winns with a ford 5.0 model 502aphub and omc/volvo outdrive model 3868156. I am wondering what everyone uses for gear oil and the oil weight too. Is mobil 1 gear oil 75w-90 ok?
Also do I fill from the bottom plug or center plug next to shifting mechanism?
This is a new boat for me

Here are the procedures and lube specs. Your Mobile 1 is fine if it's synthetic.

From the advice of a local four winns dealer He said the mercury high performance gear lube sae 90 would be ok for my 95 omc sx outdrive.
Any thoughts? I also couldn't find out if it is Gl5 certified. Anyone know?

Howdy,

You are really fine with virtually any of the (NON-limited-slip type) Synthetic gear lubricants.

"Mercury HP" is recommended and used by MANY dealers including Volvo Penta and former OMC Dealers.

Currently, there is no NMMA "Marine" specification for gear lubricants.

The most important thing you can do is change it when OMC says you should (end of season prior to winter layup etc) AND follow the OEM drain/refill instructions to the letter!

Real Volvo dealers don't or shouldn't recommend a competitors product over VP. They wouldn't be a dealer long if they did.

We were both VP and Merc dealers and as such used what was recommended by the dealer. But, if someone asked what I used in my VP 290DP, then I would have to admit to the Merc High performance.
It works fine in Volvo drives, and water doesn't separate like the VP/Mobile oil does, it mixes so you still have lubrication.

Maybe a better choice of words might have been "Many dealers don't recommend AGAINST using the stuff". because they sell both..............

Clearly this thread had the potential of turning into a REAL oil thread.....:thumb:.......but maybe not.

The last time my Four Winns had the drive oil replaced (by a Four Winns dealer) , they didn't bother to refill it with oil........with the expected results!!
