Gear Oil Hose Connection

I have a 1996 Alpha 1 Gen 2 out drive with the reservoir gear oil setup. I had a leak and noticed the hose transporting the gear oil from the transom to the gear case was disconnected at the transom side. To replace this hose must the whole gear case be removed? Do you think I'd be able to get the hose re-connected without removing anything else?
Thanks

Re: Gear Oil Hose Connection

I would bet that the hose is not diconnected, but the fitting that goes through the transom has the hose barb broken off. It's plastic and a complete piece of junk. The only thing to do is replace the fitting. There is a quick disconnect fitting on the inside that removes the hose from the reservoir, than an E ring holding the bulkhead fitting in. A real pain to get to, but it can be done.
On the outside, you will need to pull the outdrive. (Get used to it, it better be a yearly thing for other reasons) and pull the bellhousing to access the fitting and the hose.
Go up to the adults only sticky and downlod the OEM service manual #14 for more details. The parts are inexpensive (Cheap, that is why they break) to replace but a real PITA to do.

You arent kidding.... :(

Another tip- get an old white sheet, put it right under the area of the clip, and fill in all the gaps around hoses, wires, cables, etc. that way when the clip falls, it will fall into the sheet and be easy to find.

Tip #2 - get a telescoping magnet, and use that to get the clip into place, then a second hand (preferably someone elses) to push it into place.

If you dont have a full catalog of profanity in your vocabulary, you will by the time you get that clip on. What a royal pain.
