Ok guys lets start here, when I took my boat out last weekend I noticed on my post inspection that the prop was loose due to the loss of the cotter pin and the nut backed off a little. luckily I did not lose the prop. Tonight I lowered the drive and noticed all of the gear oil sitting in the exhaust outlet behind the prop. When I lowered it the oil came running out? Help please ! OMC 800 1990
I also noticed the prop shaft has play forward and back

I checked a few past post and I am getting the idea that it is in the carrier? Should I just replace the seals here to start? and where can I get them? will the shaft stay or come out when I remove the carrier assembly?

I didn't even know they were still using 800's in 1990. Are you sure about that?????

I think so Don. Honestly I read my owners manual on the boat and that is what it said. I know its an OMC with 4.3l. LOL sorry if the 800 part is incorrect. Do you think it could be my thrust washer being loose or something?

Well, before we go any further with this, lets find out for sure what you have.
Look at these pictures and see which one looks like yours (or at least close)

800 aka stringer drive (picture may be wrong, but they look alike.
Then you have a Cobra drive, not an 800. Makes a big difference.

What you need to do is drain the gearlube and do a pressure check to find the leak. While it's pressureized, get a spray bottle with some water and dish liquid and spary everything. The leak will soon be evidend by the bubbles.
There is a slight amount of movement on the propshaft in and out, or you could have the thrust hub missing for the prop.

which is the thrust hub for the prop because the only thing I lost was the spider washer that the cotter pin goes through. can I pressurize with 10 or 20 lbs with my compressor through the top fill plug hole and look for the bubbles or do I need some special pressurization tool? Thanks for your time Don.

Re: Gear Oil in my lower unit

I pressure tested and found the oil leaking around the carrier housing. Easy fix just waiting on parts. It looks like there is an akward gap in the washer behind the carrier though.
