I have a 1970 Chrysler 55hp I pulled it out the other day and got it started after running it i noticed small leak on the lower unit. Seems like there should be a screw or pin in there. I'm changing the gear oil out now and don't want to add anything if I need a pin or something.

Thanks.

Re: Gear Oil Leak

In the first photo, the bottom hole that shows gear oil draining is the shift pivot screw hole. A special screw goes in there and MUST have a nylon washer behind the head to prevent leaking. Without this screw, the engine will not shift into or out of gear. IF you removed it to drain the oil, put it back without moving anything and you may get lucky: The lower unit will shift normally. If you moved the shift control, it is almost a certainty that the shift yoke will have moved and you will need to disassemble the lower unit to reset it.

The hole above it in the second photo is a weep hole. It is there because the front chamber goes almost all the way down to the gearcase and will fill with water when running the engine on a boat. Because the front chamber does communicate with the exhaust, some burned oil residue will issue from it.

This particular lower unit has only a fill and drain hole. These are the large flat headed screws: One up high on the lower unit and one at the bottom of the gearcase torpedo about midway from front to back

Re: Gear Oil Leak

I missed the bottom screw when i was doing this that's why I thought the pivot screw was the drain. Looks like I was lucky and I got the pin in and it's shifting in forward and reverse. Thank you for your help! Lesson learned.
