Its been awile since ive been here. Anyway. I am changing my oil in the lower unit of my 60Hp 1981 johnson. I have read here maybe an article in the newsletter, but can't remember now on lowerunit oil. I was wondering if i can use regualar oil, well i mean i know i can its still 90wt or whatever, but i think i remember seeing that the marine oil deals with water intrution better than normal does. Is this true, its not that im to cheap to buy it its just that i have some 80-90wt regular oil sitting around and its a 30 min trip to town to walmart to buy lower unit oil. Just let me hear your thoughts please.

I tried to search but got frustrated, i havent been here since the forum changed and have not got the catch of the new menus and search features.

Re: Gear oil type?

I can use a flamethrower to cook my dinner, but I use an oven instead.....why? because it's the right thing to use for the job.

You are going to have to go into town anyhow to get new gaskets for the fill plugs anyhow, so why not get the right gear oil for the job.
