It takes a special oil, I used to own one that used it but i cant remember whats its called. Its a thin mineral oil type. I used to buy it from a Johnson dealer.
think in terms of transmission oil, but not sure regular ATF is appropriate in a marine gearcase. (Can readily buy the type C, and it's clearly labeled for electric gearcases, so no real reason to substitute.) But wait for input -- may be something special with your model.
Start at the beginning !-----Model # is required here as the last year of production for electric shift was 1972.----We need to know exactly what motor you have.
when I was researching my motor which is a 79, I remember being thankful that it was listed as the 1st year without electric shift, not sure where I got this info, online though, if I'm wrong it just goes to prove you cant trust what you read on the internet, get a manual I guess:noidea: doing parts lookup 72 is the last year that calls for shift solenoid, now I got to figure out where the false info comes from
1972 was the last year for electric shift outboards.----OMC sterndrives are a different story.-------------Then again there are some control boxes that say " powershift II " on them , but those are NOT ELECTRIC SHIFT either.
You really need to check the model number of this engine. It will tell you what the year is. OMC made a crossflow 100 hp in starting in 1972, then not again till 1980. The 72 is an electric shift, which takes the older Premium Blend gear oil. The latter takes conventional mechanical shift gear oil.
