I was just wondering if you guys knew what gear oil the lower unit would take on a 1961 75hp johnson outbaord?

They all take pretty much the same. Get a good quality outboard lower unit oil. It's usually around 80 or 90 weight. But you want outboard oil as it has additives that work better when water infiltrates. Reqular gear oil wont be as good thataway.

You can use the Bombardier HiVis oil, or their high-grade XPFR. Just make sure it is a 61. In 62 they came out with the electric shift lowers and they take a different oil, the Premium Blend-made exclusively for 62-72 higher hp electric shift lowers only. Samo is correct, the marine oils are different than automotive oils.
