I want to change the gear oil in a 25 hp johnson, i just bought. The manual calls for OMC Ultra-HPF or OMC Hi-Vis gear case oil. So my question is, can I not just use marine grade EP90 gear oil? What's the difference?

Re: Gear Oil

Any Marine Grade 85W90 or 90W extreme pressure gear lube will be fine.

If your 25 still has the oil injection system hooked up do yourself a favor and get rid of it and then run 50:1 premix. The oil system is very prone to failure.

Re: Gear Oil

I just bought this motor and I am wanting to service it before I run it on my boat. I've been reading all day about the oiling system. For peice of mind i disconnected it this morning. And pre-mixed the fuel. But i am not sure if I've done it right, basiclly unplug wires for tank, disconnect the fuel line from both sides of the pump and plug together, removing the tank and pump. Am I missing something?

That is all you have to do. I also secured the connect the went to the tank out of the way so that it wouldn't hit anything. As far as servicing goes besides the L/U lube you might want to also replace the water pump impeller and install new set of Champion QL82C spark plugs . Other than that you should be good to go.
