Hi there, new to boating here but I am HOOKED:). I have an 89 omc cobra drive. I am going to change the gear oil this weekend (yes i have a proper manual) I'm also a lic auto tech so I am sure I can handle the job. I have searched thru the posts here and cant quite pin down if its ok to use Quicksilver premium gear oil in my Cobra. It currently has an unknown yellow oil in the drive. I am the second owner and don't know its service history. I know this is a beat down topic but just want clarity on this particular brand and type of oil. I believe its just the mineral based oil and not the synthetic stuff.

Also what is the weight of that oil- its not written on the bottle?

Thanks guys,
Sorry to ask such a boring question, just dont want to damage my cobra-I actually like it, it has personality!!

Cheers,
Stu.

Re: Gear oil

If you want to use Merc oil because it's really easy to find, use the Merc High Perfomance lube, not the Premium. Even Merc doesn't recommend the Premiun in their outdrives.

Re: Gear oil

Thanks Don, its not that I want to use merc oil its just what I bought today cause it was available and on the shelf, I thought it was the right stuff. I will return it! What would work best in my cobra? I just dont want to damage my drive.

I dont have a dealer that sells the OMC hi vis near my location otherwise I would put that in.

Your advise is appreciated as to whats best.

thanks

Stu

Re: Gear oil

I used the Merc Hi Performance in my Volvo drive, and many Cobra drives for customers. The thing I like about it, is if per chance water gets into the drive, the Hi Per turns milky and stays that way. With the Volvo, OMC, or Mobil I, if you let is sit the water separates and you lower gears and bearings are sitting in water alone, not water held in suspension and the lube still protecting bearings and gears.

PS: Since I was working for a Volvo dealer, we put in the Volvo gear lube. It separates also, but it is what a Volvo dealer should install in a Volvo drive. Makes the warranty people happy.
